Screen Recording

Okay let's talk about screen recording applications for Windows.

Apple MacOS already has this built in with the OS so doesn't need a secondary application for it. - Read here

With Windows it doesn't have a built in screen recording application and there's many and then very many more options to go about using applications to record your screen.

The Best

These applications are the greatest options for when wanting to screen record

Nvidia Shadow Play/ Share

This application works on any computer in the modern era of having a Nvidia Graphics card I think there are a few low end GPU's that aren't supported but overall its a very good application, you have presets, control the FPS, capture the past 20 minutes maximum when using instant replay. Very great recording! with no lag impact to system performance.

All you have to do, to use this application is to install Nvidia Experience, This application is also how you can update your drivers for your GPU.

Free (Requires Nvidia Gpu)

OBS

This application is great for streaming! A lot of twitch streamers use this. This application has a decent learning curve to it. If you're not sure about how it operates there tons of guides.

With OBS you will want to learn about the differences between CBR and VBR.

CBR means - Constant bit rate

VBR means - Variable bit rate

There's a lot that goes into tuning OBS so that your not pushing out to high of a bit rate for if you streaming on twitch if it's just going to be compressed anyways to something way lower.

OBS isn't all that great on low end systems and requires your CPU to have very strong single core performance in order to prevent there to be much stuttering, dropped frames and audio desync.

If your running a system that has an Intel i3 Core Processor chances are that your not going to be able to do much in terms of using OBS and to achieve what you want to achieve with it.

Free (Open source)

Mirillis Action

This application is still being updated and in my opinion this is as good as its going to get for having the feel for having Nvidia Share type of low performance impact on windows screen recording if you don't have Nvidia hardware in your system.

I love using this software on laptops that may not have a Nvidia GPU.

I always want to be able to capture something quickly and then quickly push it to Telegram or somewhere where I need to show a client something and Mirillis Action does that very well when I don't have Nvidia Share.

Paid $20 - $30 (Lifetime license, free updates, great performance.)

The Underdog

Applications not talked about but are great

ShareX

This isn't just a screen recording application but does a lot more than that alone.

It's a color picker, does OCR to take text from an image to then copy the text to your clipboard on Windows, screen recording and so much more.

Free (Open Source)

The Worst & Old Options

These applications are sub optional at best

Game Bar

Windows 10 and 11 has the Game Bar with your press Windows key + G but this only effectively works then your in a fullscreen game application. There's no bitrate toggles or presets to define the level of quality or fps that you want to capture this is the worst option ever.

Free (comes with Windows very poor customization to settings, and control, no desktop recording options, Not being able to pause your recording during capture)

Camtasia

This is a software that has been around for ages. This one isn't ideal for game recording. This application is pretty expensive than many other screen recording apps for Windows. If you use this for creating a tutorial on YouTube it wouldn't be all the bad it does have a learning curve for editing and working with it's own proprietary captures for when you are done with recording but this proprietary format is used for also capturing where the mouse cursor is on screen so that later in editing you can enhance where you where pointing and make it stand out.

You can still of course take your camtasia captures and export them into mp4 files but they can take a long time, it's very clunky and slow no matter what machine you run camtasia on.

It's the equivalent of buying a gold Rolls Royce but it's 7,000 pounds in weight, with a small 50 CC motor you paid 300 million dollars for that you could use a Toyota Corolla for to do the same task to run to the grocery store that wouldn't take as long.

Paid $120+ (okay recording performance for low/mid end laptops and desktop focused recording and tutorials for youtube to show where your cursor is on screen, no game recording support)

Bandicam

This application has been around for quite a long time, but I wouldn't recommend it its been a meme with the watermark for "www.bandicam.com" at the top of videos on youtube, that get uploaded. The quality is much to be desired when there's way better options out there that are way better than this dinosaur of an application this is. It's not a professional type of software.

Cost: don't download it. $50
